What is a collective noun?

Please give some examples.

Ola's answer:

A collective noun is a singular noun that refers to a group of people or animals.

Examples: team, staff, pack.

In British English it can be used with either a singular or a plural verb.

In American English it must be used with a singular verb.

Example sentences:

"Our team won."

"The staff is present."

"A pack of dogs wandered the streets."
