Questions about fruit and vegetable names

What are some fruit names in English?

Easy fruit names in English are apple, orange, banana, lemon, peach and strawberry, and then grape, pineapple and olive. Other common fruits are pear, cherry, mango, melon and watermelon.

What are some vegetable names in English?

Easy vegetable names in English are tomato, potato, carrot and mushroom, and then corn, garlic and lettuce. Other common vegetables are onion, cucumber, peppers and broccoli.

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

Both answers are right. In science, a tomato is a fruit, because it grows from the flower of the plant and has seeds inside. In the kitchen and in the store, people call it a vegetable, because it is not sweet and we eat it in salads and sauces.

Is a potato a vegetable?

Yes. A potato is a vegetable that grows under the ground. It gives you a lot of energy, like rice and bread, so some food guides put it with them, but in English we call it a vegetable.

Is corn a vegetable?

It can be a vegetable, a grain or a fruit. Fresh corn that you eat hot from the ear is a vegetable. Dry corn that people use for popcorn and flour is a grain. In science, each yellow seed is a small fruit.

Is a banana a berry?

Yes, in science a banana is a berry, and a strawberry is not. A berry grows from one flower and has its seeds inside. A strawberry has its seeds on the outside. In everyday English, we still call strawberries berries.

Is a mushroom a vegetable?

Not in science: a mushroom is not a plant, it is a fungus, a different kind of living thing. In the kitchen, people cook mushrooms and call them vegetables.

What is the plural of potato and tomato?

The plural of potato is potatoes, and the plural of tomato is tomatoes: add -es. The plural of strawberry is strawberries.
